If there’s anything we can say about the legendary Rob Liefeld and his relationship with Deadpool, it’s that he certainly hasn’t forgotten about the character since creating him back in the early 1990s. And though the Merc with a Mouth has generously evolved in the time since, the writer-artist has returned to lend his talent in recent works such as Bad Blood. Furthermore, he’s not shy when it comes to chiming in on certain topics on social media.
The latest topic causing Liefeld to lend his two cents is that of D. Piddy’s future on film following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. If you need to be brought up to speed, it’s expected that Ryan Reynolds be the only previously established actor from the X-Men franchise to carry over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he’ll likely continue starring in R-rated movies of his own.
Without further ado, here’s what Rob had to say on Instagram regarding the subject we’ve been discussing:
“If I had to predict, venture a GUESS, just a guess…DP will appear in pg-13 Marvel films on a limited basis, interacting with Marvel pals while retaining his own R rated film franchise releases under the Fox banner. Those shenanigans with Vanessa can’t be released under that Disney Castle banner, y’know?? We will all find out soon enough. A 10 year old Deadpool action figure was the best selling single toy of 2018 for Marvel. You can’t make this stuff up!”
Truth be told, I think he’s right. Aside from possibly putting out alternate PG-13 cuts similar to that of Once Upon A Deadpool, it’d be wise for the Mouse House to continue allowing for Wade Wilson to persist with outings geared toward mature audiences because that’s where his bread is buttered. But when it comes to teaming up with the X-Men or Avengers, then it makes sense to pull back the pottymouth just a little.
Regardless, the future does indeed look bright for Deadpool. In addition to being a box office powerhouse, he remains a draw in the comic book medium and sells merchandise by the boatload. Given all the cash he rakes in, I don’t see him going away or being toned down anytime soon.
