Sony must be pretty darn pleased with how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse turned out. The animated movie might not have rocked the box office, but the critical and fan acclaim and the fact that it earned both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award more than made up for that. It’s no wonder, then, that the studio is busy at work on the two confirmed follow-ups – an inevitable sequel and an all-female team-up film with Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen.
And, according to our source, that’s still not all. We Got This Covered has been told that Sony’s also developing a spinoff for Spider-Man 2099. Anyone who stuck around until the end of the credits will know that the future-dwelling wall-crawler appeared in the hilarious final scene of Spider-Verse, which saw Miguel O’Hara hop across the dimensions and end up in the world of the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, living out the “Spidey means Spidey” meme in the process.
While this could have been a one-and-done sequence, Miguel’s cameo did hint that he would have some sort of role in a sequel. Well, apparently the studio’s confident enough in the character’s potential to give him his own vehicle. And you can see why.
There’s lots of story and visual potential in bringing Spider-Man 2099’s Marvel universe of tomorrow to the big screen. Plus, we’ve been told that Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac will reprise his role in the spinoff, after providing his voice for Miguel’s Spider-Verse cameo.
This news follows the confirmation that Sony is also planning to expand the Spider-Verse onto the small screen as well and is developing numerous Marvel TV series, both in live-action and animation. A Spider-Ham cartoon has been suggested and we previously told you that an Agent Venom series is in consideration as well, starring the MCU’s Tony Revolori.
Suffice it to say, the future looks bright for the property, but tell us, would you like to see a Spider-Man 2099 Spider-Verse spinoff? Swing on down to the comments section and have your say.
