In case it wasn’t obvious enough already, yesterday’s Avengers: Endgame pre-sales made it all too clear that the film is going to do phenomenally well when it arrives in cinemas later this month. How well exactly? Well, only time will tell, but a new piece from ComicBook.com offers a little speculation on the subject.
The article starts off by exploring the “best-case scenario” of the film making over $1 billion worldwide on its first weekend. This would mark an increase of at least 56% on Avengers: Infinity War’s opening weekend haul of $650 million. Should Endgame sustain this gap, the feature would end up making something in the region of $3.2 billion, which would comfortably beat Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Mind you, even by the standards of a film as anticipated as Endgame, this best-case scenario seems like a bit of a long shot. Alternatively, we can look to previous reports that suggest an opening weekend gross of $840 million globally. This would give the movie a 31% lead over Endgame, which, if sustained, would end in a total that lies somewhere in the $2.68 to $2.7 billion region, falling just a little short of Avatar’s $2,787,965,087 figure.
Again, this is all just speculation, and the reasoning here even seems fairly questionable. For one thing, the above projection doesn’t take into account that Infinity War opened in the hugely important China market two weeks after coming out in North America, which significantly affected the movie’s opening weekend gross. Nonetheless, seeing how the film managed to shatter Fandango’s 24-hour pre-sales record in just 6 hours, it feels safe to assume that Avengers: Endgame will manage to beat a few more commercial records when it comes out on April 26th.
