Avengers: Endgame Writers Explain Why [SPOILERS] Didn’t Get A Funeral

Avengers: Endgame's writers and directors address why this particular character didn't get a funeral scene in the recent movie.

There are two major deaths in Avengers: Endgame. Both of them hit hard for the various fans these heroes have out there, but it’s fair to say that the movie itself spends more time mourning one of them than the other.

First up, Natasha sacrifices herself to collect the Soul Stone from Vormir and then Tony dies using the Infinity Stones to reverse the Snap. Following that, the film ends with a moving funeral scene where the Marvel universe assembles to pay their respects to the fallen Armored Avenger. And while we do get some moments of the characters grieving over Nat, we certainly don’t get a protracted funeral scene for her.

So, why no wake for the Black Widow? Well, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked this by NY Times and explained that they didn’t think it made sense for Natasha, a less public figure than Tony, to get the same treatment.

“Tony gets a funeral. Natasha doesn’t. That’s partly because Tony’s this massive public figure and she’s been a cipher the whole time. It wasn’t necessarily honest to the character to give her a funeral.”

Some fans might not be satisfied by this answer as, even if she isn’t as well-known to the world, there’s no reason for the other heroes to not hold a private service for her. Thankfully, the Russos were asked the same thing in an interview with a Chinese website and stated that they think a funeral for Nat happened off-screen.

“Do you remember the superheroes in the movie gathered to talk about her? She probably also has a funeral, but it is not presented in the movie. Maybe the future will come out because there are still many stories to tell in the world of Marvel.”

Honestly, some fans may see some light in the fact the heroine didn’t get a funeral, as it might mean that she’s not really dead. There are a couple of ways you could theorize that her death by the Soul Stone isn’t permanent, but even if it is, at least we’ve got the Black Widow solo movie coming up.

Do you think Nat should’ve had a funeral in Avengers: Endgame, though? Be sure to have your say in the comments section down below.
