The BBC’s upcoming Dracula reimagining has announced a batch of new cast members, and it seems showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have brought with them some old co-stars from past TV series they’ve worked on.
Sherlock fans who were already looking forward to the drama, as it’s being positioned as something of a sister show to the hit detective series, will be pleased to find out that Anderson himself, Jonathan Aris, is joining the cast. Aris starred on all four seasons of Sherlock as the forensics expert who has a rivalry with Benedict Cumberbatch’s sleuth.
Sacha Dhawan is also signing up for the Victorian-set supernatural drama. Best know to audiences as Davos in Marvel’s Iron Fist, the actor also has Sherlock pedigree as he was the killer in season 4’s “The Six Thatchers.” Alongside Aris and Dhawan, three more stars have been announced as well: Catherine Schell (classic Doctor Who, Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Youssef Kerkour (Home) and Clive Russell (Game of Thrones).
They join the previously-announced cast members including John Heffernan, Joanna Scanlan, Dolly Wells, Morfydd Clark, Lujza Richter, Mark Gatiss (yes, he’s in it, too) and, last but not least, Claes Bang as the titular bloodsucking count. None of the cast except Bang have been matched up to their roles just yet, but those who know Bram Stoker’s novel can make a few educated guesses.
Moffat and Gatiss have previously teased that Dracula will follow the vampire as its protagonist, but the challenge for them was to ensure that he remained thoroughly evil despite this. From what we understand, the show will be structured much like Sherlock, with seasons consisting of 3, 90 minute episodes. Filming will be taking place in Slovakia and England and the three installments of season 1 will be directed by Jonny Campbell (Westworld), Damon Thomas (Killing Eve) and Paul McGuigan (Sherlock).
Dracula will rise again on the BBC in the UK and Netflix around the globe in 2020.
