Even by the standards of 3-hour films, Avengers: Endgame is packing a whole lot of plot. And as the feature moves between developments at a zippy pace, it leaves us with a few moments that had many filmgoers scratching their heads. Fortunately, in a recent Q&A, co-director Joe Russo provided answers to some of the fans’ most pressing questions, and since we’re going to be delving into one of those responses right here, be warned that spoilers lie ahead.
You may recall the scene at the climax of the film where Thanos summons an entire army from the past. How he did he pull that off, though? Well, the answer lies in those Pym Particles that the Mad Titan managed to get his hands on thanks to Nebula. According to Russo, the purple tyrant was able to replicate the particles with the help of his minion Ebony Maw:
“There is a guy called Maw in his army, he was a great wizard. Thanos himself was a brilliant genius as well. Those two easily reverse engineered and mass produced Pym Particles.”
Seeing how a mere human like Hank Pym had a supply of these particles, it seems plausible enough that Thanos and his intergalactic goons could figure out a way to replicate the phenomenon. Now that Tony Stark has snapped away the whole army, however, we can probably assume that those mass produced Pym Particles have been turned to dust.
In that same Q&A, Russo offered some further insight on the logic of the film’s time travel plot. The director even had an explanation for Captain America’s heavily scrutinized final scene, claiming that the First Avenger lived a full life with Peggy in a separate timeline, before jumping back to the main reality to reunite with Sam Wilson.
But putting aside any potential plot holes and points of debate, the biggest questions that Avengers: Endgame left us with were really about the future of the MCU, which is one matter that Joe Russo remains tight-lipped on.
