It’s no secret that Lucasfilm is about to pump the brakes on its Star Wars franchise, and that’s despite the fact that 2019 is shaping up to be a banner year for everyone’s favorite far-away galaxy.
With The Mandalorian and The Rise of Skywalker on the cards, not to mention the launch of the Galaxy’s Edge theme park, Star Wars fans are bracing themselves for a truly special year. But beyond 2019, things will fall silent. And for very good reason.
As Making Star Wars so rightly points out, the answer is two-fold: on the one hand, Lucasfilm wants to give The Rise of Skywalker some breathing space before it doubles down on another big franchise, otherwise it risks the onset of Star Wars fatigue. And secondly, there’s a new studio being constructed beyond the walls of Pinewood, where filming on David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ saga will likely take place.

The Star Wars hiatus we are currently having after The Rise of Skywalker is to let the studio construction finish up and to allow the Weiss and Benioff to create the best possible saga without an unreasonable time crunch. If all of this is accurate and at this time we believe that to be the plan, it seems like the responsible and smart way to handle the next saga.
So, there you have it; a little respite for Star Wars once 2019 has come to a close. That’s no bad thing, either, particularly when you remember that Solo: A Star Wars Story struggled to leave a mark on the box office. Ron Howard’s spinoff film had a lot of issues, but releasing so soon after The Last Jedi – itself a divisive movie – couldn’t have helped. This news tidbit also means we’ll have to wait that little bit longer before Benioff and Weiss relocate from Westeros to a galaxy far, far away.
