Avengers: Endgame Directors Reveal The Film’s Original Title

For the longest time, Marvel fans were left to theorize about what the title of "Avengers 4" could be as the studio was keeping a lid on what the grand finale of the first decade of the MCU was called. Finally, we found out last December that it was Avengers: Endgame, famously following on from Doctor Strange's line - "we're in the endgame now" - from Avengers: Infinity War.

For the longest time, Marvel fans were left to theorize about what the title of “Avengers 4″ could be as the studio was keeping a lid on what the grand finale of the first decade of the MCU was called. Finally, we found out last December that it was Avengers: Endgame, famously following on from Doctor Strange’s line – “we’re in the endgame now” – in Avengers: Infinity War.

As the movie is now finally out there in the world, the Russos are opening up about the changes the title went through before Endgame was chosen. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe Russo revealed what the moniker was for a lengthy period. “Well, it was Infinity Gauntlet for a long time,” he said.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans. Back in 2017, Zoe Saldana let slip that the fourth Avengers flick was at least at that time called Infinity Gauntlet. However, the Russos expertly put us on the wrong track by saying that wasn’t the title. It’s unknown if the fact that the name went public is the reason for the change or whether they always intended to pick something else and Infinity Gauntlet was more of a working title, but it would certainly have made sense.

Just as Infinity War comes from one of Thanos creator Jim Starlin’s comic book arcs, so too does Infinity Gauntlet. Except, of course, the two storylines were swapped in the comics and the IG arc was the source of inspiration for the Infinity War movie. The title would also have been a leftover from the days when the two films were going to be marketed as a pair and called Infinity Wars Parts 1 and 2.

The title Avengers: Endgame is definitely the best pick though, as it rolls off the tongue well and brings with it the right amount of gravitas. Joe Russo did say in the same podcast chat, however, that the film goes by the slightly less dramatic Avengers: No Hope in Korea, which is a fun bit or trivia you can now share with your friends.
