Avengers: Endgame Director Finally Clears Up The Thanos Gauntlet Plot Hole

Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has finally cleared up the confusing history surrounding Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

If you’ve been keeping up to date with the 20-plus movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then you’re probably aware that the history surrounding the Infinity Gauntlet presents a few problems. While most fans might remember it from both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Thanos’ weapon of mass destruction actually predates both of these films.

Diehard Marvel enthusiasts will recall that the Infinity Gauntlet first made its appearance all the way back in Phase One. During Thor, a right-handed version of the gauntlet, complete with replicas of all six Infinity Stones, was housed in Odin’s Vault, where it was guarded by the Destroyer. Years later, during the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Hela took over Asgard and took it upon herself to explore Odin’s stash of ancient weapons and treasures. When she came across the gauntlet, she merely declared that it was a fake, and proceeded to knock it right off its pedestal.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we got another glimpse at the Infinity Gauntlet during the post-credits scene, where Thanos is seen slipping it on his left hand. In Infinity War, it’s revealed that he had the dwarves of Nidavellir forge the gauntlet for him, so he could more easily wield the six Infinity Stones. Of course, that begs the question: where did the end-credits scene take place during Age of Ultron?

Thankfully, Endgame director Joe Russo has shed some light on the matter. Speaking to ComicBook.com, he confirmed that Thanos received the Infinity Gauntlet on Nidavellir, which is where the aforementioned post-credits scene took place. Russo expanded on this during an interview with ComicBook.com last year, saying:

“I think that it would be connected to Eitri. I think that clearly, he is the one who forged the gauntlet and Thanos had the gauntlet at that point in time. It’s been a while since any of the Asgardians have interacted with Eitri and his people.”

Of course, there’s still one mystery to be solved. If Thanos was the one who ordered Eitri to create the Infinity Gauntlet, how exactly did Odin have a replica of it? Do you have your own explanation? If so, be sure to sound off in the comments section below!
