Avengers: Endgame Writers Fire Back At Those Who Say The All-Female Scene Was Pandering

There are so many moments to talk about in Avengers: Endgame's grand climax - the epic shot of all the heroes racing into battle together, Cap finally saying "Avengers assemble!", Iron Man's heartbreaking sacrifice, etc. One bit that's got the most attention, though, is the scene where Captain Marvel is joined by a host of heroines from all corners of the MCU.

There are so many moments to talk about in Avengers: Endgame‘s grand climax – the epic shot of all the heroes racing into battle together, Cap finally saying “Avengers assemble!”, Iron Man’s heartbreaking sacrifice, etc. One bit that’s got the most attention, though, is the scene where Captain Marvel is joined by a host of heroines from all corners of the MCU.

The sequence has drawn both celebration from those who felt the women of Marvel needed highlighting in such an awesome way and criticism from those that felt the moment was pandering and not authentically earned as few of these characters had met before this event.

While speaking to Variety recently, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained why they felt they had to include the scene. Markus said that it was the right time to highlight the many great heroines who’ve amassed over the past 10 years of movies, and he also fired back at those who think the shot is mere pandering, making a good point in the process.

“Marvel fans, increasingly, with every movie, [have] gotten these great female characters. Some people can call it pandering, but it’s also like, we have tons of shots of all men. Why not have a shot of all women and they’re so cool? It just seemed like ‘Let’s celebrate it!'”

McFeely then opened up about how moving it was to film the scene, revealing that much of the crew came on set to watch the team-up being shot. It was something that only reinforced how important this moment was.

“I remember on the day we shot that, every woman on the crew and in the offices came down and were sort of milling about behind the cameras. That was, perhaps, the most moving part of it for me, how important it was for everybody to see it.”

Seeing how popular this minuscule team-up in Avengers: Endgame is, Marvel would do well to start seriously thinking about an A-Force movie starring an official all-female Avengers roster. After all, Captain Marvel‘s $1 billion+ box office gross proves there’s a hunger out there for more women-led MCU films. Until then, though, fans will no doubt keep bringing up this instantly iconic scene to prove why it’s necessary.
