Avengers: Endgame Directors Reveal Cap Encountered Loki When He Went Back In Time

According to Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Captain America reunited with Loki when he went back in time.

Given that there’s already so much to address in Avengers: Endgame, there are many important moments in the narrative that aren’t just brushed over but are also completely absent. Of course, the biggest is Captain America’s mission to go back in time and replace the six Infinity Stones to their proper points in the timeline. We imagine this would be a pretty tough job for just one hero to complete, especially when it took 10 of them to grab the Stones in the first place.

As such, it would’ve been nice to get at least a glimpse of how Cap handled the whole thing when he traveled back to the past and most importantly, fans have been wondering what would’ve happened when Steve Rogers returned the Soul Stone to Vormir. This must’ve meant that he came face-to-skull with his old foe Red Skull, right?

Yes, it’s been confirmed that he did indeed reunite with the villain, but in all the excitement created by the thought of Cap and Johann Schmidt meeting one another again, we’re all forgetting about another important reunion we were robbed of: that of Captain America and Loki.

When Steve went back to fix the timeline by returning the Stones, he surely would’ve come across the God of Mischief. In fact, according to directors Anthony and Joe Russo, it would’ve been impossible for him to set things right again without locating Tom Hiddleston’s fan favorite character.

“Loki, when he teleports away with the Time Stone, would create his own timeline,” Joe confirms. “It gets very complicated, but it would be impossible for [Cap] to rectify the timeline unless he found Loki. The minute that Loki does something as dramatic as take the Space Stone, he creates a branched reality.”

“We’re dealing with this idea of multiverses and branched realities, so there are many realities,” Anthony added.

So, it seems Avengers: Endgame robbed us of two exciting reunions then, and Loki’s narrative in particular has really got fans speculating. After all, it looks like the film left things a bit open-ended, paving the way for further appearances from the God of Mischief.

If you’ll recall, while interfering with the events of The Avengers as they attempt to retrieve the Space and Mind Stone, Iron Man and Ant-Man accidentally cause 2012’s Loki to escape with the Tesseract. And given that we don’t get to see him again for the rest of the movie, fans now have reason to believe that the character is effectively alive again after his sacrifice in Infinity War.

True, this Loki exists in a separate timeline, but the fact remains that at least there’s another version of him out there and if Marvel wants to continue his adventures on the big screen, they could potentially produce a few films set in this splintered timeline.

But we digress. It’s exciting to know that Cap would’ve encountered Loki again when he went back in time in Avengers: Endgame and with any luck, the studio will one day shed some light on what exactly went down during Steve’s heroic mission.
