Avengers: Endgame Writers Reveal The Fat Thor Scene Made People Angry On Set

The writers behind Avengers: Endgame have revealed that there were a lot of people on set who were angry about the fat Thor scenes.

The opening scenes of Avengers: Endgame saw each of the surviving heroes coming to terms with the events of Avengers: Infinity War in their own way. For Thor, that meant completely changing his appearance and lifestyle, much to the shock of fans.

Yes, as you surely know by now, after Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fail to undo the snap at the start of Endgame, the movie jumps forward a whole five years, by which point, Chris Hemsworth’s character has become a long-haired, overweight, hard-drinking layabout. Given that we’re used to seeing the God of Thunder with a ripped physique in all his MCU adventures, Thor’s beer gut took a lot of people by surprise, and according to Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, it also made folks angry on set.

Speaking in a recent interview, the scribes noted that some of the cast and crew weren’t pleased with what they’d done to Thor, saying:

“There was a sad moment where it was like, ‘We’ve got this gross, disguising body for Thor now. And then they unveiled it and it’s just kind of like everybody else’s body here. There were many people on set who were angry at us about doing that to Thor. He kills the biggest bad guy in the MCU and it’s such a failure. It breaks him completely.”

Though it may have angered some, the decision to radically change Thor like they did was a good move in the end – in our opinion, at least – and it was especially nice that Endgame didn’t have some sort of getting back in shape scene for the character. It was fun to see that Thor was still fat in the climactic battle and wasn’t even a tiny bit less badass as a result of it.

Plus, by the time the credits rolled on Avengers: Endgame, the God of Thunder was clearly in a better place, with the film teasing that we’ll see more of him in Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3. As for the possibility of another solo flick, that seems likely as well given that Tessa Thompson recently relayed word that Thor 4 discussions are now underway. Wherever he shows up next, though, it’ll be interesting to see if the hero is back to his usual shredded self.
