Netflix is about to get us all worried for the state of the world once again as Black Mirror is set to return for its fifth season next month. Details on the upcoming run of the acclaimed sci-fi anthology series had been kept under wraps but, following a sneak peak released yesterday, Netflix dropped the trailer for season 5 this morning which unveils that we’ve got three new terrifying technological tales to look forward to/dread starring a range of big names.

The surprise trailer was first teased by the Black Mirror Twitter account, which shared a mysterious message at around 6AM EST. “Is this a bad time?” it read. “You seem distracted.” 10 minutes later, the account followed it up with the full 90-second trailer, along with the caption: “You should have seen it coming.”

Black Mirror season 5 will feature the likes of Avengers: Endgame‘s Anthony Mackie, Andrew Scott (Sherlock), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Topher Grace (BlackKkKlansman) and Miley Cyrus. From what we can tell, the three stories will be made up of one concerning an unhinged man (Scott) with a grudge against the world’s obsession with their phones, a husband (Mackie) having problems with his marriage and a teen whose only friend is an Alexa-like household A.I.

This shortened season 5 will have to live up to the craze that one-off special “Bandersnatch” made when it landed in December last year. The choose-your-own-adventure-style feature-length episode went down a storm online, with critics praising it for blurring the line between the mediums. We’re not expecting anything as technically-ambitious this time around, but hopes are high that these episodes will still provide plenty of great drama and thought-provoking themes.

Get ready to revisit a dark version of the near future when Black Mirror season 5 drops on Netflix on June 5th.
