Avengers: Endgame Hits $2.5 Billion As It Closes In On Avatar

After only 18 days in theaters, Avengers: Endgame has surpassed the $2.5 million mark at the global box office, inching towards Avatar for the top spot.

Going onto its 19th day at the top of the cinematic universe, Avengers: Endgame is continuing to close in on James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.79 billion) for the number one spot at the global box office.

After last weekend’s international numbers were posted, the finale to the MCU’s Infinity Saga officially surpassed the $2.5 billion benchmark, bringing the race down to only a “few” more million dollars.

But despite this achievement in what’s really the film’s infancy in theaters, this weekend’s results show that Endgame is continuing its surprising decline at the box office. Making just under $5 million domestically, the three-hour epic capped off its lowest-earning day in exhibition Monday, a 56 percent drop from the $10.7 million it made just seven days earlier.

With this surprising cool off, the feat that seemed like a guarantee is now looking less likely with each passing night. Endgame is still trailing Cameron’s top blockbuster by $293.65 million worldwide. And while that may not seem like a lot compared to the amount it’s already made, the final Avengers movie will be facing some ferocious, bad-ass competition at the theaters once John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum comes out Friday.

With all that said, Endgame should still have some time to clinch that #1 spot, so it’s not like they’ve lost the battle just yet. While the film’s entering the middle of its third week since release, when put in conversation with Infinity War‘s 5-month run, it’ll need to average at least $18.35 million weekly to reach Avatar.

So far, Endgame has had no problem reaching those numbers, but again, it’ll be facing some more competition in the coming days.

Tell us, though, do you think the Russo Brothers’ production has what it takes to beat out James Cameron’s at the global box office? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and continue your support by seeing Avengers: Endgame in theaters now.
