Thanks to the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, it’s expected that Avengers: Endgame will finally lose its place at the top of the domestic box office this weekend, but we somehow doubt that the bosses at Marvel Studios are losing much sleep over the matter. In fact, it’s now projected that the Avengers: Infinity War sequel will very soon top the North American haul of Avatar to become the all-time second highest grossing film domestically.
The US and Canada total of James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi sits at $760.5 million, though part of this figure comes from the movie’s reissue. In its initial run, Avatar took in $749.8 million, but either way, Endgame’s current total of $748.8 million suggests that the Russo Brothers’ latest feature is on the verge of taking second place. That being said, we wouldn’t bet on Endgame rising any further up the domestic ranking. As it stands, the number one spot is held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and with a total of $936.7 million, J.J. Abrams’ 2015 film is seemingly in no danger of losing its crown.
On a global level, however, Endgame has only Avatar left to beat, and it’s gradually edging closer to that top spot. Right now, the film’s worldwide total sits at $2.542 billion, putting it $246 million behind Avatar’s $2.788 billion figure. It certainly seems doable for Endgame to make up the difference, though we’ll surely have a better idea of the movie’s chances by the end of this third weekend.
Regardless, Avengers: Endgame already has an insane number of commercial records under its belt, including biggest opening weekend of all time, and fastest to ever cross the $2 billion mark. Though James Cameron may be hoping for Avengers fatigue to set in soon, it’s clear that the filmgoing public isn’t bored of Marvel just yet.
