As with the magazine’s coverage of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi before it, the latest issue of Vanity Fair reveals a first look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And now, prior to the mag’s release, the twin collector’s covers have been shared online, and they’re definitely something for SW fans to behold.
From the camera of acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz, the covers depict Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren (nee Ben Solo) in new costumes. While not completely different from the characters’ established fashion sense, these revamped outfits build on the threads worn by the hero and the villain in the past two entries in the Sequel Trilogy.
Rey and Ren are still following the classic Star Wars rule that the good guys wear white and the bad guys wear black, though in Rey’s case, it means that she’s swapped back to a pure white following her dalliance into grey in The Last Jedi, which explored her wavering on the edge of the Dark Side.
The sight of Rey and Kylo being pitched as two sides of the same coin reminds us that there’s a huge following out there of “Reylo” fans, who fiercely ship the characters getting together, despite being on opposite sides of the Force. But could this actually play out in J.J. Abrams’ closer to the Skywalker Saga? Who knows, but it seems that Ridley herself isn’t on board with the idea. The actress previously admitted that she couldn’t get it behind it “in a personal way.”
For the most part, it seems like the movie will keep Rey and Kylo apart. While the master of the Knights of Ren delves deeper into the Dark Side, Rey and her friends will journey on a mission together in the Millennium Falcon. Going by the trailer, it seems this will lead them to the destroyed Death Star on Endor, and possibly to a resurrected Emperor Palpatine.
