Us Star Says The Film Doesn’t Need A Sequel

Jordan Peele's Us is one of the most discussed films of 2019 thus far. The entire eerie universe created onscreen, as well as the audience's abundance of unanswered questions makes it seem to some like a sequel to the horror flick is inevitable. Tim Heidecker though, who played both Josh and his doppleganger in the movie, disagrees wholeheartedly.

Speaking in a recent interview, the actor said the following on the topic:

“It didn’t feel like the kind of movie that needed or wanted a sequel. I don’t think [Jordan Peele] built it that way. I think everything you need to know about that movie is in the movie. It reminds me of the end of The Sopranos. It’s like, that’s all the access you have to the information. It is now contained in that 90 minutes or however long it is. Thinking about what exists after that is not really time well spent.”

Then again, The Sopranos ending is one of the most controversial of all-time for that very reason. After all, fans usually like answers. Even if Heidecker thinks the conclusion was perfect as is, ambiguity can be frustrating for many.

That being said, the actor likely won’t be involved in potential sequels anyway. Both characters he portrayed got killed off in the movie, so barring flashbacks, which actually were implemented in the first movie, he won’t get a chance to be a part of any possible new entries into the Us canon.

In any case, the unnerving world Peele created for this film seems too vast not to explore deeper. Regardless of what one thinks of the movie as a whole, the creativity taken to come up with such a twisted idea deserves to be fleshed out more. There are plenty of routes the acclaimed director can take if he wants to continue the story, too, or he can come up with a completely new plot set within the same world. He could also theoretically mirror the success of the The Purge franchise and come out with several moneymakers every other year.

All that being said, it’s unknown if Peele even wants to make a sequel, as he’s thus far been mum about the idea. He’s a very busy man with several TV shows and film projects currently in the works and while some may be hopeful that he’ll revisit Us, it’s also possible that he may heed Heidecker’s advice and let the film speak for itself.
