Captain Marvel EP Says Troll Backlash Had No Impact On The Movie

As with many movies with female leads, it speaks to the sorry state of the world that Captain Marvel had a pretty sizeable blowback from internet trolls prior to and proceeding its release. Thankfully, it seems Marvel paid no attention to these negative reactions and pressed ahead with what they were doing.

At least, that’s according to Marvel Studios EVP Victoria Alonso, who also served as exec producer on Captain Marvel. She took part in a Reddit AMA this week and was asked by one fan about the heavy amount of backlash against the film. Alonso explained that they knew going in that “a portion of the audience” would have a problem with it but it “never interfered” with their vision for the movie.

“We were aware that there were people that were not ready or perhaps not welcoming of the film but it never interfered with the story line or our vision of the film. When you make stories that could potentially touch an international audience, there will always be a portion of the audience that does not 100% love it. But we hope they give us a chance and see the film before they finalize their opinions. There is something for everyone in our films, even if you’re a little reluctant to watch.”

It’s good to hear that the filmmakers were confident enough in what they were doing that they didn’t listen to some of the ridiculous comments coming from detractors online. In fact, the trolls continued to have just as little impact after the pic was released. As we all know, Captain Marvel earned over $1 billion at the global box office, proving that all those YouTube videos blasting Brie Larson are pure nonsense.

Alonso’s Reddit AMA also saw her touch on the topic of whether Carol Danvers might come out as gay in Captain Marvel 2. The EP suggested that the idea isn’t off the table, but emphasized that whatever character development occurs will have to come organically from the heroine’s journey.
