Jason Reitman seems intent to get the whole band back together for his upcoming Ghostbusters movie. Comedian Bill Murray and three-time Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver are both set to reprise their roles from the original in the new film, where they’ll be joined onscreen by Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, who also helped fight ghosts in the legendary 1984 comedy.
Murray will once again star as Peter Venkman, a parapsychologist who leads a group of similarly eccentric ghost hunters. Weaver, meanwhile, is returning as Dana Barrett, the musician who can’t seem to escape unwelcome attention from the paranormal. The success of the franchise helped launch both of these actors into very prestigious careers, so it’s nice to see them return to their roots all these years later.
Their involvement will also hopefully inspire the rest of the crew to reunite for one last hurrah. Harold Ramis unfortunately passed away in 2014, though there has been some discussion of potentially using CGI to bring his character back. Additionally, Rick Moranis and Annie Potts may be inclined to reprise their roles as Louis Tully and Janine Melnitz now that everyone else seems to be on board.
In addition to all of these old faces being brought back, there’ll also reportedly be some new ones in the mix. We know that Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Carrie Coon are all attached to the project and it’s likely that there are more stars who’ll tie their names to the feature as time goes on. But for right now, this looks like a very solid cast.
Following the disappointment of the 2016 Ghostbusters all-female reboot, Reitman is vowing to give this movie “back to the fans.” What that means remains to be seen, but it’s at least a promising sign for those who felt let down by the remake. And it’s an even better sign that Murray and Weaver are back and ready to hunt down some ghosts in Ghostbusters 3.
