Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters in less than a month, and as Marvel fans across the world prepare for the follow-up to to one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters – Avengers: Endgame – Tom Holland’s been staying pretty busy on the press tour. And his charm seems to be carrying quite the stamina.
That may be a result of the vigorous training the 23-year-old actor had to endure in preparation for the film. With his acrobatics, and aerodynamics, the webhead’s always been among the skinner of the superheroes, especially in comparison to the likes of Superman, Thor or Captain America.
But Holland apparently needed to bulk up big time for Far From Home, despite Peter Parker’s geek status. “[He’s] older, he’s stronger, he’s fitter,” the young star explained in a recent interview with Margaret Gardiner. And though a lot of us would hardly consider a successful workout regimen to be a bad thing, Holland’s apparently one of the few that does.
“I was a lot bulkier in this one then I was in the first one, which I think, in hindsight, I wouldn’t do again,” he said. “I didn’t enjoy the bulking process, and I also don’t think I looked in better shape. I was just a bit thicker, and a bit chubbier in the face.”
But his physical appearance onscreen wasn’t the only thing that bothered Holland about the added weight during production. He went on to explain that his difficulties putting on muscle caused him to prioritize weights over cardio, so that any scene requiring Peter’s heightened agility was more difficult to perform.
“Whenever I had to do cardio, I was incredibly unfit. So it wasn’t great. But I love working with my trainer and I’ll work with him for a very long time.”
“Incredibly unfit” may be a strong, exaggerated description, but nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see what scenes Holland’s talking about once Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 2nd.
