Dwayne Johnson Down To Play Himself In The MCU, And We’re All For It

Avengers: Endgame director Anthony Russo has the perfect MCU role for Dwayne Johnson, and the actor says he was born to play it.

On Monday night, the MTV Movie & TV Awards took place. Avengers: Endgame was the big winner, of course, collecting gongs for Best Movie, Best Hero for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Best Villain for Josh Brolin’s Thanos. Director Anthony Russo was on hand to pick up the Best Movie award, but also attending was Dwayne Johnson, collecting this year’s Generation Icon award.

Despite him possessing the most classically superhero-esque physique in the business, the actor’s never played a Marvel or DC character before (though he’s come close a few times). His proximity prompted a question for Russo though about which hero he thought Johnson should tackle, and his reply was excellent:

“The superhero that I would most like The Rock to play is The Rock. He is the best version of him.”

You know what? He absolutely is. Why bother having Johnson pretend to be some existing hero when there’s no reason he couldn’t stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the existing heroes as himself? After all, if our world was threatened by some evil intergalactic menace and we needed to send one very special person to do battle with it, we could do a hell of a lot worse than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, right?

For his part, the actor was positively tickled pink by the idea, taking to Twitter to say:

If the stars align, we could actually see Johnson finally stepping into the superhero world fairly soon. He’s long been signed up to play Shazam’s nemesis Black Adam and anyone even remotely familiar with the comic book character will know that there’s literally no one on Earth more perfect for the role than Dwayne. If you can’t wait that long though, this summer’s Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw looks like a superhero movie in all but name.

Still, what I wouldn’t give to see the Avengers assemble once more with The Rock standing in their ranks, eyebrow cocked and ready to rock.
