A Spider-Man/Venom Movie May Happen, But Not In The MCU

Despite it taking place in its own universe, fans seem keen on Venom making the jump over to the Marvel CInematic Universe.

While other Marvel Cinematic Universe films are certainly more memorable or exciting, Spider-Man: Far From Home is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most interesting movies. Taking place after Avengers: Endgame, the next MCU outing directly addresses a handful of the series’ most important events, including the tragic death of Iron Man, and the consequences of the Multiverse, which was inadvertently created when Thanos harnessed the power of the Infinity Stones.

Speaking of other universes, if there’s one thing fans have (for some reason) been clamoring for, it’s a crossover between the MCU and “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters” (that really needs a snappier title, am I right?). With only one film under its belt – 2018’s Venom – the franchise still has a long way to go. While Tom Hardy was praised for his dual role as Eddie Brock and the titular symbiote, the flick was generally panned by critics, despite raking in close to $900 million at the box office.

With the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the imminent release of Far From Home, Marvel fans have been patiently waiting to see an interaction (friendly or deadly) between Venom and Peter Parker. Interestingly, Kevin Feige himself weighed in on the matter, though his response didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, the head of Marvel Studios explained that the ball was in Sony’s court:

“I think probably it’s up to Sony. Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point.”

The key thing to note here, as MCU Cosmic points out, is how he says it’s “up to Sony,” and that they have Venom in “their world.” Presumably, this means that if the two characters were to ever meet, it’d be in a non-MCU film, and likely in a movie within Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters franchise.

Still, a crossover between Venom and Spider-Man would be welcome no matter which universe it takes place in, so let’s just hope the two studios are able to work something out sooner rather than later.
