At the time of writing, Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War sequel boasts a global total of almost $2.750 billion, putting the film just over $38 million behind Avatar’s $2.788 billion figure. Proportionally speaking, it’s not much of a gap, though the box office crown isn’t in Marvel’s hands just yet.

Back in April, you may recall that Endgame got off to a phenomenally strong start, shattering Infinity War’s record for biggest opening weekend of all time. In the weeks since, however, the film’s momentum has reduced considerably, suggesting that if the movie ever does surpass Avatar’s total, it’ll do so at a slow crawl.

That being said, Disney still has at least one more trick up their sleeve for getting Endgame over the finish line. We are, of course, referring to next week’s re-release, which will reportedly boast an extra six minutes of footage. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige clarified that the updated screenings will feature an array of post-credit sequences, including “a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.”

A scroll through Twitter will tell you that this added content will be enough to get quite a few fans back in theaters. Still, as the film’s weekly numbers continue to decline, only will tell if the re-release can serve as the final push that Avengers: Endgame needs in order to topple Avatar. After that, Marvel’s Phase 3 comes to a close with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd.
