Avengers: Endgame Has Now Passed Avatar’s Original Theatrical Run

The race to see whether Avengers: Endgame will beat Avatar to be crowned the highest-grossing movie of all time is nearing the finish line, and it's still neck and neck. As of its second to last weekend before Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives and likely takes away its steam, Endgame has now reached a new record that brings it closer to edging past James Cameron's sci-fi epic.

As noted by Reddit user Comrade_batman, the Marvel movie has passed Avatar‘s original theatrical run. However, it still has $38.3 million to go before it bests Avatar‘s total box office gross. You see, the 2009 film was granted an extended run in theaters which contributes to its overall figures.

On its initial release alone, though, Endgame has just got it beaten. As you can see in the Box Office Mojo screenshot below, Avatar‘s original release earned $2,749,064,328 while Endgame‘s current gross sits at $2,749,603,966.

So, will Endgame manage to beat out Avatar entirely? It’s tricky to say, as it’s all riding on this weekend. Last Wednesday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the movie would be re-released with seven minutes worth of additional post-credits scenes inserted to give folks an extra incentive to go see it again. A recent poster suggested that the studio will pitch it as a thank you gift to the fans, but it’s obvious that this is Marvel’s last-ditch attempt to crack that most-coveted of titles, making Endgame the most successful film in cinematic history.

The post-credits scenes will apparently include, among other things, a Stan Lee tribute. As for what other treats are in store, fans are keeping their fingers crossed that there’ll be some sort of Phase Four hint or a possible lead-in to Far From Home. But tell us, will you be catching the Avengers: Endgame re-release this weekend?
