Joker May Debut At Venice Film Festival As WB Plots Oscar Campaign

It looks like Warner Bros. and Joaquin Phoenix are gunning for an Oscar, and debuting Joker at the Venice Film Festival might be their ticket to success.

Although the biggest movie of the year (yes, we mean Avengers: Endgame) is set to leave theaters in the near future, there are still plenty of superhero flicks to look forward to. Spider-Man: Far From Home is due out next week – be sure to check out our review if you haven’t already – and before long, Warner Bros. Pictures’ standalone Joker film will be hitting the big screen, too.

Needless to say, we’re incredibly excited to see director Todd Phillips’ take on the maniacal clown. So far, the studio has been keeping a tight lid on the actual storyline, but last month we reported on a few juicy plot points, which hint that Arthur Fleck/Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) will incite a revolution putting the haves against the have nots, set in a less pristine version of Gotham City during the early ’80s. Despite being a few months out, it looks like a few industry insiders have already had the chance to watch a rough cut of the film, and one critic seems to think that Joaquin is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination.

This might not come as a surprise to some. After all, over the past 20 years, Phoenix has been put up for three Academy Awards, but he hasn’t edged out his fellow actors in order to take home the gold statuette just yet. That might change with the release of Joker, though.

As ScreenRant reports, Warner Bros. is considering premiering the movie at this year’s Venice Film Festival. It wouldn’t be an entirely bad idea; after all, Oscar contenders such as Gravity and A Star is Born got their start at the prestigious event, and Joaquin himself took home an acting award when The Master premiered at Venice back in 2012.

It’s not entirely clear what Warner Bros.’ plans are to promote Joker, but with the studio skipping out on Hall H at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Venice Film Festival might be the perfect event to introduce the Clown Prince of Crime to the world.
