This year’s Ghostbusters Fan Fest brought us a number of useful little tidbits about the much-anticipated Ghostbusters 3. Most exciting for longtime fans though was perhaps the announcement that much of the original cast will be returning for the upcoming pic.
Indeed, we received confirmation a few weeks back that Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson are all set to reprise their roles in the threequel, which is currently being referred to as Ghostbusters ’20. Sure, Ackroyd and Hudson returning isn’t terribly surprising, but Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver? Now that’s exciting! After all, Murray has always been hesitant to revisit to the role of Peter Venkman, often saying that he feels no one wants to see a bunch of fat old guys chasing ghosts about.
But of course, the movie will feature some new faces as well, and Deadline brings word today that Ant-Man star Paul Rudd has signed on to play a teacher in a small town. Details on the role beyond that remain under wraps, and it’s unclear how involved he’ll be, but we imagine an A-list actor like Rudd will have a pretty big part in the story.
Speaking of which, we still haven’t been told much about the plot just yet, but from what we know, Ghostbusters 3 will center on Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War) as a family who’s said to have a special connection to the original team of ‘Busters from the old movies.
Beyond that, it’s unclear what the new threat will be or how the returning actors factor into it all, but it’s clear that things are moving along rather quickly on Ghostbusters 3 right now and as soon as we learn more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
