Hellboy Star David Harbour Confirms There Won’t Be Any Sequels

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Hellboy lead David Harbour confirmed that at this time, Lionsgate isn't planning on doing a sequel.

If you’re one of the few people who came out of Hellboy this year anticipating a sequel, well, we got some bad news for you.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the star of the pic, David Harbour addressed the possibility of coming back to the role. And apparently, it doesn’t look like Lionsgate’s planning on doing a second Hellboy anytime soon.

“I don’t think there’ll be much of a light,” Harbour admits. “There’s a lot of people who reach out to me who really loved it and really enjoyed the new take, and were just happy to see him back on the screen, but I know in the culture at large, I don’t think it was very well received.”

Well, Harbour’s certainly right about that. Upon release, the film garnered an atrocious 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, as many critics pointed out that it didn’t come close to matching Guillermo del Toro’s two previous entries. And to make things even worse, Lionsgate pulled the plug awful quickly when it came to the box office.

All together, Hellboy managed to scrape together just over $46 million worldwide, against an estimated budge of $50 million. The Brokeback Mountain actor’s never been shy discussing the film’s failure, and he continued to do so here.

“I don’t think it made a lot of money,” Harbour went on to explain. “I don’t really keep up with those things too much to be honest, but I don’t think the perception was that it was a hit, and so in that way, I don’t know that the risk is worth it,” the actor says. “I think the idea is to move on. The producers spoke to me just saying ‘Great job,’ they really liked what I did, but I haven’t heard anything about a sequel, and I’m not hanging my hat on anything like that.”

But don’t fret, Hellboy fans. We reported earlier this year that Netflix is planning to produce its own TV show with the sort-of horned beast that’ll feature a brand new cast. And from what we know, those plans haven’t changed.
