As the supposed final entry in the decades-spanning Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a lot of loose ends to tie up, some of which have their origins in the earliest events of the Prequel Trilogy.
For one thing, we have the old prophecy that Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One who’d bring balance to the Force. Some would argue that Anakin achieved just that when he defeated Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. But now that Ian McDiarmid is set to reprise his role as the ultimate evil, it seems the Dark and Light Sides still have some unfinished business to settle.
So, how is this all going to play out? Well, fans still have several more months to speculate, but according to a new article from Screen Rant, we could be on the verge of receiving a surprising revelation about the so-called “Chosen One” – namely, that there’s more than one of them.
As we delve into this theory, it’s worth noting that the Star Wars franchise has often dealt in twos. For example, there’s both a Light Side and a Dark Side to the Force, and before Padmé passed away, she gave birth to twins. Similarly, fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars may recall the three god-like beings who inhabited the realm of Mortis: the Son, who embodied the Dark Side; the Daughter, who represented the Light Side; and the Father, who was responsible for maintaining a balance between his two children.
All of these pairings point to the notion of two sides in symmetry, rendering the singular Chosen One quite the anomaly. Could it be that Anakin was supposed to have a sibling or a companion who was his equal in Force power? Maybe and maybe not, but jump ahead to the Sequel Trilogy, and you’ll find two new characters who represent different sides of the same coin.
We are, of course, referring to Anakin’s grandson Kylo Ren, and the heroic Rey, whose ancestry remains shrouded in mystery. Though it’s said that Luke Skywalker believed his nephew Ben Solo to be the new chosen one, perhaps we’ll find that only Kylo and Rey together can finally bring balance to the Force.
All in all, it’s an interesting and well-reasoned theory, but we’ll find out how director J.J. Abrams really intends to finish what Anakin started when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
