Marvel Doesn’t Have To Let Spider-Man Appear In Venom 2 Anymore

While it might not be lighting the world on fire in the same way that Avengers: Endgame did, it's safe to say Spider-Man: Far From Home is no slouch when it comes to ticket sales. To date, the latest MCU film has grossed over $575 million and even broke a few box office records along the way. In the wake of Spidey's renewed popularity, some fans are now wondering whether or not he'll show up in Venom 2.

It’s a good question and one that doesn’t have the most straightforward answer. In the past, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the ball was in Sony’s court, and while an MCU film starring Venom was not likely, there was always a chance Spidey could make the jump over to Sony’s cinematic universe instead. Earlier today though, we caught wind of an inside scoop, with one of our industry sources telling us Spider-Man’s future would depend on the box office performance of Far From Home.

It’s by no means official or confirmed, but our source revealed to us that if the MCU’s latest manages to gross over $1 billion worldwide, creative control of the character would fully transfer to Marvel. If that happens, the studio’s team can then decide when and where Spider-Man would show up. Of course, this means the decision could be made to keep him from making an appearance in Venom 2.

Frankly, we’re still a little confused on all the details ourselves – we don’t pretend to have an intricate understanding of Hollywood contracts and deals – but a transfer of creative control based on a movie’s box office performance is something we haven’t come across before. That being said, we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground on this one and will update you as more info comes down the pipeline on Venom 2 and Spidey’s future on the big screen.
