Spider-Man: Far From Home swung into theaters last week, shattering box office records as the first MCU movie to be released in the wake of the monumental Avengers: Endgame. While we can now say that Peter Parker’s second solo outing served as the perfect closing chapter in the 23-film Infinity Saga, its entire story, from Peter’s journey of self-discovery to Mysterio’s sinister motivation to the everyday lives of everyone who returned from the Blip, was molded in the shadow of the late Tony Stark.
While it should go without saying that the death of Iron Man would have a lasting effect on the future of the MCU, a new interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seems to place a heavy emphasis on the fact that Endgame’s consequences will shape every film from here on out.
During a chat with Comicbook.com on the Far From Home press tour, Feige delved into Tony’s death and how it affected the creation of the latest Marvel movie:
“There are other things to avoid in [Spider-Man: Far From Home], now that you’ve seen it, that we didn’t want to give away in the press. But its position within the world, and dealing with his emotional journey post the death of Tony Stark, we held off until after Endgame, obviously…. Will Tony’s death be felt in future movies [though]? Oh, yes.”
For the time being, the fourth phase of the MCU is still a mystery, so we can only guess as to which potential features will feel the impact of Iron Man’s death and which ones will focus more on Thanos’ snap. Characters like Black Panther and Doctor Strange, who have met and fought alongside Tony in the past, will assumedly address his ultimate sacrifice in their forthcoming sequels. Meanwhile, the more cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, like the Angelina Jolie-starring The Eternals, will likely revolve around a post-Blip society. That is, unless it’s a prequel as has been rumored.
In any case, now that Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters, Marvel is finally expected to dish out more info about Phase 4 in the coming months. Until we know for certain which films are headed our way though, the only thing we can be sure of is that after Avengers: Endgame, the superhero genre will never be the same.
