Happy Birthday To Sherlock Star Benedict Cumberbatch

Happy birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch! The British actor's celebrating his birthday today (July 19th) and he's turning 43. It's funny that Ben's birthday happens to be the same day that San Diego Comic-Con properly kicks off, too, as though the star won't be attending this weekend, he's earned himself a great many SDCC-friendly roles over the years that have made him a geek favorite.

Obviously, it was landing the title part in BBC’s Sherlock that launched him into the stratosphere back in 2010. Cumberbatch then managed to follow up playing Sherlock Holmes with numerous other iconic roles, including Khan in Star Trek into Darkness, Smaug the Dragon in The Hobbit movies and an acclaimed turn as Hamlet on stage. He even turned up as the voice of Satan in Good Omens. Oh yeah, and he also plays some superhero guy or something.

Yes, Cumberbatch has starred in four Marvel movies to date as Doctor Stephen Strange (and, when put together, they’ve earned well over $6 billion for the studio), but he’s definitely not done with the part yet. The Sorcerer Supreme is set to return in Doctor Strange 2 at some point in Phase Four. We might even get confirmation of that tomorrow during Marvel’s big Hall H panel at Comic-Con.

In the meantime, the actor has no less than three movies coming out over the next year or so. The Current War, featuring Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, finally hits theaters this October after being completed in 2017. He’s also due to star in Cold War thriller Ironbark (release date TBD) and will be seen as one of the talented ensemble in Sam Mendes’ WWI drama 1917 – which features his old Sherlock co-star Andrew Scott.

Benedict Cumberbatch‘s career clearly shows no signs of slowing down, then, so we wish him yet another successful, hard-working year to come. And if he could bring Sherlock back soon, that’d be great, too.
