The announcement of the full slate for Marvel’s Phase 4 has left fans in fits of excitement since yesterday. As strong as the line-up of five movies over the next couple of years is, though, some are disappointed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is not a part of it.
Originally, GotG Vol. 3 was scheduled for next May. However, director James Gunn’s firing last year meant it missed its allotted production time. Gunn was rehired back in March and is set to helm the threequel, but he’s got another commitment first – after Marvel let him go, he hopped over to DC to write and direct The Suicide Squad.
Gunn has now restated on social media though that Guardians 3 is coming. In response to a fan who wanted to know when it will release, the filmmaker replied: “Sorry to disappoint. Guardians Vol. 3 IS happening, but I am finishing The Suicide Squad first.”
There’d been rumors that Marvel was rushing Guardians 3 into production next year ahead of a 2021 release. However, given that TSS is also filming in 2020 and is coming out in 2021, that was always a long shot. It’s much more sensible for Gunn to get his DC movie out of the way before returning to the Marvel fold. He doesn’t mention any time frame in his tweet, but it seems like a good bet that Vol. 3 will fall in 2022, the first year of Phase 5.
Rumors point to the film exploring Rocket’s origins, with the raccoon meeting his creator the High Evolutionary (possibly Mark Hamill) and getting a love interest in talking otter Lylla (fans want Lady Gaga for the voice). A range of characters such as Adam Warlock, Nova, Quasar, Beta Ray Bill and possibly Thor are thought to play roles as well.
Tell us, though, are you willing to wait a while for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Have your say in the usual place down below.
