WandaVision Will Reveal How Scarlet Witch Gets Her Name

WandaVision is officially happening. The upcoming Disney Plus TV series was announced at Marvel's Comic-Con panel on Saturday, with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany confirmed to be reprising their roles as Wanda Maximoff and her android boyfriend. And now that she's got her own vehicle in the MCU, it seems one big oversight from her previous appearances will be addressed in the show: Wanda's finally going to be called Scarlet Witch.

Olsen revealed while on stage in Hall H that WandaVision will be “weird, deep and fun” and also explain why the heroine is called the Scarlet Witch. That’s pretty exciting to hear, too, as so far, Wanda’s superhero name hasn’t been uttered in the MCU. Which has always been a little strange, as practically everyone else on the Avengers’ team has a codename that’s referenced regularly.

It’s also curious that an explanation is required for why she becomes known as Scarlet Witch. After all, she wears a lot of red and has abilities that could be classified as magic. It’s really not that big of a jump.

Of course, Olsen could be alluding to the fact that Wanda – I mean, Scarlet Witch’s – powers will be increased to their enormous comic book levels in WandaVision. It’s been revealed that the surviving Maximoff twin will develop her reality-warping abilities from the page in the show and this is presumably how Vision will be resurrected. Their kids, Wiccan and Speed, were also alluded to at the panel, suggesting Wanda will create a happy artificial reality for herself and Vis. But how long will it last?

Whatever happens, we know that Scarlet Witch will be back soon after her series for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswith Olsen confirmed to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.

Watch out for WandaVision on Disney Plus in early 2021.
