Deadpool 2 Director Addresses The Merc’s Absence From Phase 4

Deadpool 2 director David Leitch wants to see everyone's favorite merc in the MCU, but it seems the ball is in Disney's court.

This past weekend has been a cause for celebration, especially if you’re a big fan of the MCU. As is typical for San Diego Comic-Con, a handful of movie-related announcements were made, and as you’ve probably heard, the House of Mouse recently pulled back the curtain on what we can expect from Phase 4, which is set to officially kick off next year. Between 2020 and 2021, there’s plenty in store for Marvel aficionados, with five full-length feature movies, and five TV shows that will premiere on Disney Plus.

There’s lots to look forward to, then, but some of you might have noticed that one character in particular wasn’t mentioned at all. Yep, for whatever reason, fans were not given any sort of update on Deadpool, which is certainly a shame.

After all, it’s already been more than a year since the Merc with a Mouth’s second film hit the big screen, and there’s no definitive information on a follow-up. We’ve heard rumors that Disney still plans to make an R-rated sequel though, which would also serve as a jumping-off point for Marvel to bring the titular character into the MCU.

Unfortunately, these unconfirmed reports are, well, unconfirmed, and we aren’t entirely sure what the future looks like right now. And as Heroic Hollywood writes, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch has explained that he’s equally in the dark as to what’s in store for Wade Wilson.

“I don’t, honestly. And it’s not for my lack of trying. And I also want to give – I’m just giving everybody their time.”

While some fans are beginning to lose hope, Leitch pointed out that Deadpool’s absence at SDCC should not be taken as a bad sign, but rather, an indication. In fact, he’s guessing Marvel is still trying to figure things out.

“[…] I know Marvel announced their slate and I think people were like, ‘Deadpool’s not on it.’ I would never say never. And I think, obviously, he’s such a beloved character and it’s such a compelling world people want to go back. And I think they will find a way to do it. But I’m just being patient and let everybody take a breath and see how it works for them in the new Marvel, Disney world. And, hopefully, I’ll get the call. And that would be cool.”

For now, we’ll have to wait and see just what Marvel has in store for us, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any additional info as it comes down the pipeline. That being said, tell us, how do you think the next Deadpool movie should handle the Merc’s MCU debut? As always, let us know down below in the comments section.
