It’s not a big surprise that It: Chapter Two received an R-rating today from the Motion Picture Association of America, but the reasons why should have horror fans giddy for this highly-anticipated upcoming sequel. As if the first installment of the series wasn’t gory enough, director Andy Muschietti has followed it up with a movie that sounds even more graphic. According to the MPAA, the film earned the restrictive rating due to “disturbing violent content and bloody images throughout, pervasive language, and some crude sexual material.”
This isn’t that shocking given the stories that have emerged from set. After all, screenwriter Gary Dauberman has already promised that there would be a lot more blood in the sequel and now, it sounds like that might be an understatement.
The flick reportedly has one scene that features over 4,500 gallons of fake blood. According to Muschietti, that’s a world record. For Jessica Chastain, however, even that might not be enough. The actress pushed for as much blood as possible while filming and it sounds like she certainly got her wish.
Obviously, the sequel sounds like it won’t be for the faint of heart. Those who thought the iconic bathroom scene in the first movie was over the top will likely flee the theater at the sight of what the Losers’ Club will have to endure next.
Pennywise is angrier and scarier this time around, too. Since this is the last installment, the evil entity’s going to do anything possible to finish what he started all those years ago and we’re sure that’ll involve lots and lots of blood and violence.
A hard R-rating is really the only choice Muschietti had in making a movie that would live up to its predecessor, of course, but whether this flick does that or not, remains to be seen. At the very least, audiences can be assured that It: Chapter Two will be filled with tons of blood when it arrives in theaters on September 5th, 2019.
