Avengers: Endgame Writers Say The X-Men Need To Be Rested

The San Diego Comic-Con is the gift that keeps on giving, in terms of information about the future of some of the most beloved franchises in entertainment. Recently, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely did an interview with Collider, during which they talked about their time with Marvel and some of their upcoming projects.

The most intriguing part of the discussion though was when they spoke about where they’d like to see the MCU headed in the next few years, now that the company has reacquired the rights to almost their entire roster of comic book characters, including the X-Men. Although McFeely and Markus aren’t attached to any Marvel project at the moment, they are willing to return once again to the superhero universe in the future, and even have a few considerations about which character they should write their next movie for.

“A good Surfer movie would be great. Yeah, that would be if you could take it full-on cosmic. That would be my first blush, because I think X-Men should rest a second. I could be wrong, but I think they should rest. But Surfer could use a really good standalone.”

This line of reasoning makes sense. The MCU is going to go full-on cosmic from this point onward, with the introduction of the Eternals and Adam Warlock. And who better to lead the way into the larger universe than everyone’s favorite alien surfer? It’s about time the Silver Surfer got his own origin movie, too, and as a bonus, folks will finally get to see a proper adaptation of the Mighty Galactus, who’s the fan favorite pick to take over the mantle of Marvel’s new big bad in the MCU now that Thanos is out of the picture.

The X-Men taking a break might also be a good thing for their series. At this point, the franchise has suffered from an excess of quantity to the detriment of quality. And the exit of Hugh Jackman from his most famous mutant role has left many feeling detached from the current roster of live-action X-Men. There are plenty of exciting, important characters that Marvel can focus on for the present and keeping the mutants as a future reward for fans might not be the worst idea.
