Deadpool 2 Director’s Hopeful He’ll Return To The Franchise

The X-Men are now back home with Marvel Studios, but it seems the House of Ideas isn't in too much of a hurry to make use of mutantkind in the MCU just yet. Marvel revealed their full Phase 4 line-up for 2020 and 2021 last weekend and there was no X-reboot on there. President Kevin Feige did tease that the mutants are coming, but curiously there was no mention of Deadpool.

This hasn’t knocked Deadpool 2 director David Leitch’s hopes of continuing the franchise under the Disney banner, though. While speaking to UPROXX, the filmmaker expressed his interest in making a third movie and his faith that the Merc with a Mouth is too “beloved” for the studio to leave on the shelf.

“I know Marvel announced their slate and I think people were like, “Deadpool’s not on it.” I would never say never. And I think, obviously, he’s such a beloved character and it’s such a compelling world people want to go back. And I think they will find a way to do it. But I’m just being patient and let everybody take a breath and see how it works for them in the new Marvel, Disney world. And, hopefully, I’ll get the call. And that would be cool.”

Leitch then went on to make it very clear that he’s passionate about the Deadpool franchise and really wants to explore more of the anti-hero and work with Ryan Reynolds again.

“I’m sure there are people who want it more than me, but it would be hard-pressed to find them. I love that world. I love working with Ryan. I love that character, Deadpool. So, fingers crossed we get to bring another installment to life.”

Luckily for Leitch and Wade Wilson fans out there, Disney has utilized the Deadpool brand and imagery a lot since the Fox merger which suggests they fully intend to use the character again in the near future. Likewise, Feige has maintained that he doesn’t want to change anything about the Fox DP movies as he loves what they did with him. A bevy of rumors have also brought up the various ways he could be integrated into the MCU.

Like the director says, we probably just need to be patient and give Marvel the time to work out the best way to work Deadpool into their carefully-constructed universe. And then we can watch him tear it apart.
