Marvel Studios may have announced their entire slate of Phase Four movies and television shows at last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con, but one of the most exciting projects on the horizon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one that won’t be strictly canon. Marvel’s What If…? is an animated series based on the fan-favorite comic books of the same name, and as well as featuring a veritable who’s-who of returning MCU characters, the show may even end up devoting an episode to the cult Marvel Zombies universe.
As an animated series that focuses strictly on alternate realities within the MCU, What If…? will have the scope to delve deeper into Marvel’s extensive back catalogue of comic book stories, and one eagle-eyed fan account on Twitter pointed out that a zombie version of Captain America can be spotted within the show’s official logo:

Marvel Zombies was originally published in December 2005 and written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, and takes place in an alternate reality within the Marvel Universe known as Earth-2149 that sees superheroes infected by a virus that turns them into flesh-eating versions of the undead.
That might seem a little extreme given the MCU’s PG-13 history and the fact the show is to be exclusively on the family-friendly Disney Plus, but Kevin Feige hasn’t been averse to taking some risks with the studio’s output before and has already confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the MCU’s first stab at the horror genre.
Marvel’s What If…? will hit Disney Plus in the summer of 2021, with Jeffrey Wright set to front the show as The Watcher. The number of episodes in the series isn’t known yet, but the voice cast will include Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Brolin and many more reprising their big screen roles.
