It: Chapter Two Director’s Cut Coming, Will Include Extra Footage

If it wasn't enough that the theatrical release of It: Chapter Two clocks in at 2 hours and 45 minutes, it's now been revealed that an even longer director's cut is in the works. Producer Barbara Muschietti has announced that, in contrast to the first part of It, they have enough high quality content to justify an extended version of the movie. The news came after director Andy Muschietti described the difficulty of squeezing Stephen King's epic novel into a two-part film.

The news came after director Andy Muschietti described the difficulty of squeezing Stephen King’s epic novel into a two-part film.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Barbara explained the process as so:

“We will put out a director’s cut because this time it definitely merits it…we have some amazing scenes that didn’t make it into the movie. You have to make choices sometimes and some things cannot be in this theatrical release but are definitely worthy of people seeing them at a later date.”

We already know that It: Chapter Two will be explicit enough to merit an R-rating for its release, and that the movie hasn’t skimped on blood. Furthermore, Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård has promised that his character will be even more sadistic this time around, with a grudge against the Losers’ Club after their younger versions forced the creature into an early hibernation.

In terms of extra scenes that might make it into the future director’s cut, we already know that two of the book’s more controversial moments will be covered. The latest trailer, which you can see at the top of this page, also hints that we’ll be seeing some more historical flashbacks to Derry’s past and Pennywise’s previous incarnations.

Our money’s on the extra scenes potentially expanding on these flashbacks, which take up a significant chunk of the novel, while also developing some of the lives of the adult Losers’ Club before they return to Derry. It’s probably fair to say that the director’s cut won’t feature the infamous bonding scene between the Losers’ Club children in the sewers, though.

It: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6th, and is expected to break box office records for an R-rated release. What scenes do you think will end up in the extended cut, though? As ever, let us know in the comments section below.
