Stephen King Requested A Brand New Scene Be Added To It: Chapter Two

In a recent interview, It: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti revealed that Stephen King requested a new scene be added to the upcoming sequel.

If he’s not specifically involved, Stephen King’s been notoriously hands-off for the films and TV series based off of his work. With that said, he won’t stay silent if he doesn’t appreciate what liberties a filmmaker takes in adapting his words (the most famous example being Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining). The process has become a trademark of the author, with a seal-of-approval. That was especially true in the case of It two years ago, which went on to become a surprise phenomenon.

But King broke this untold rule for the film’s upcoming sequel, It: Chapter Two, working a bit more directly with sibling director team Andy and Barabra Muschietti this time around.

As reported by Syfy, the latest issue of Total Film features an interview with Andy Muschietti, who described the author’s enthusiasm for the latest project as a huge source of inspiration. But he also said that King had one specific request: a brand new scene.

Here’s how that part of the interview was transcribed:

“It was absolutely huge. For me, it would be unthinkable when I was 12 or 13,” the director said. So when the author read the first draft of the sequel, made a few notes, and requested the addition of “one all-new scene,” Muschietti listened. You don’t tell Stephen King that he can’t write It.”

With all that said, Chapter Two could be heading in a lot of directions. Obviously we’ll have to wait until September 6th to see what the Muschiettis and their writing team actually came up with, but combined with the fact that we’ll be getting a director’s cut of the new film, it seems that a lack of ideas isn’t a problem for the creative team.

Tell us, though, does this news make you even more excited for It: Chapter Two? Or do you think that the famed author should butt out of the filmmaking process like he did during the last one? Share your thoughts and ideas with us in the comment section down below.
