Ever since 2015’s Straight Outta Compton proved that musical biopics can still pull their weight, Hollywood has capitalized on the genre. Last year saw the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, which went on to win multiple Academy Awards and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
On the heels of its success came Rocketman, a biographical musical starring British actor Taron Egerton that tells the story of Elton John’s life from his young years as a child prodigy all the way through to his successful career. Unsurprisingly, the movie also focuses on the singer’s struggles with depression and substance abuse, as well as his sexual orientation.
As has become commonplace these days, the film’s creative team shot a lot more footage than what made it into the theatrical cut, and Collider has recently shared some of the bonuses you can expect to see on the digital, DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K releases. One of the movie’s deleted scenes sees Elton confronted by his drug addiction, as he finds himself in a position to indulge and relapse. Thankfully, despite being tempted, he manages to pass on the opportunity, keeping his sobriety intact. As Collider notes, it’s not hard to see why this particular segment was cut from the initial release – Elton’s struggle with drugs shines through in a handful of other scenes.
If you’re looking to relive the experience or watch it for the first time, you’ll be glad to hear that you can pick up a digital copy of Rocketman right now. For those looking for physical media, you’ll have to wait until August 27th, when it releases on just about every type of disc format imaginable.
