New Endgame Easter Egg Reveals The Avengers Almost Traveled To 2988

One eagle-eyed Marvel fan has spotted another cool Easter egg in Avengers: Endgame that has somehow slipped under the radar.

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has officially been crowned as the highest-grossing film ever made, and it’s one that will likely be talked about for many more years to come.

Together, Marvel’s brain trust – namely Joe and Anthony Russo, along with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – delivered a multi-layered megaton that surpassed Avatar‘s global box office haul. But financials aside, Avengers: Endgame is an incredibly rich movie from a storytelling perspective, as that aforementioned writing team were able to draw upon the MCU’s vast archives and serve up more Easter eggs and subtle references than you can shake an Infinity Gauntlet at.

And it seems one eagle-eyed Marvel fan has now spotted another cool Easter egg in Avengers: Endgame that has somehow slipped under the radar. As you’ll see from the gallery below, during the scene in which 2014 Thanos is preparing to time travel, the monitor alludes to the year 2988, which may well be a nod to First Battle of Svartalfheim.

Via Reddit:

Just Noticed when nebula was bringing 2014 Thanos to the present there’s what seems to be a history section at the top right part of the screen with dates, 2012, 2988 & 2009. WHO WENT TO 2988?!?!

Another user then replied:

The First Battle of Svartalfheim happened in 2988 BC and in your picture, it looks like it’s on BC instead of AD.

That battle is when Asgard defeated the Dark Elves and Malekith. The Aether was there…

According to a Redditor by the name of ‘MarvelInfinityComics,’ it’s the only MCU event that matches the 2988 date mentioned in Avengers: Endgame. If true, it would challenge Hulk’s Ben & Jerry’s namesake ice cream as the most subtle Easter egg tucked away within the fabric of what is now the highest-grossing movie, well, ever.

Avengers: Endgame is currently available on all platforms in North America – digital, DVD, Blu-ray – while those in the UK have been forced to wait until September 2nd before they’re able to take Endgame home.
