Well, folks, the unthinkable has finally happened. Even though the most recent Spider-Man flick went on to haul in well over $1 billion at the box office, everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood hero will no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As you’ve surely heard by now, Disney and Sony Pictures were unable to figure out a deal that would work for both parties on future films and as such, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will not be involved with Peter Parker’s next big screen outing, or any that come after that.
Though there’d been reports that negotiations were still ongoing and some sources said they were hopeful the studios would be able to come to some kind of agreement, it seems that Spidey really is gone from the MCU. Making that abundantly clear is Sony themselves, who’ve finally broken the silence and issued the following statement, confirming that they’ll no longer be working with Feige.
“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” says a Sony spokesperson. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”
“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” says the statement. “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
Given that Far From Home has latched onto the top of the franchise and currently has $1.11 billion under its belt, you’d think that this would leave Sony and Marvel eager to hop back into bed together, but unfortunately, the two parties just couldn’t work things out. And what a shame that is. Especially when you consider how incredible Spidey’s time in the MCU has been under the watchful eye of Mr. Feige.
