Joker Star Slams Marvel Fans, Compares Them To Religious Fanatics

Several days ago, GLOW and Joker star Marc Maron caused quite the stir online when his comments about comic book movies quickly spread like wildfire across the internet. During an interview to promote the latest season of Netflix's wrestling-based comedy, Maron ended up getting a little sidetracked when talking about how he had no interest in ever watching the likes of Avengers: Endgame, and had some strong words for fans of comic book movies.

Several days ago, Joker star Marc Maron caused quite the stir online when his comments about comic book movies quickly spread like wildfire across the internet. During an interview to promote the latest season of Netflix’s wrestling-based comedy GLOW, Maron ended up getting a little sidetracked when talking about how he had no interest in ever watching the likes of Avengers: Endgame, and had some strong words for fans of comic book movies.

In case you missed it, here’s what he said:

“I have some issues with them and I generally don’t like them. I don’t wanna be bullied into seeing those movies. I’m a grown-up, I’m not seven, and I think those movies are for grown, male nerd children. I just don’t go see them, I’m not interested.”

Unsurprisingly, certain sections of the Marvel fanbase didn’t react too favorably to being so vocally and publicly criticized for taking an interest in both the highest-grossing movie of all time, along with the most successful franchise in the history of cinema, and took to social media to vent their frustrations. Now, Maron’s responded to the backlash on Twitter, but he probably hasn’t done himself any favors in trying to endear himself to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans of GLOW, or any of Maron’s other comedic work for that matter, are well aware that his abrasive personality plays a huge role in his onscreen persona, but it seems that some MCU diehards have taken the actor’s words incredibly personally and have responded in kind by retaliating online.

Clearly, Maron isn’t completely opposed to the idea of comic book movies having taken a pivotal supporting role in Todd Phillips’ upcoming psychological crime thriller, although he has admitted that his interest came from the actors he’d be working with rather than any vested interest in the source material. Maron has already addressed the hypocrisy of appearing in the genre head-on then, but Joker also looks set to be so vastly different from any of Marvel Studios’ output that he can still justify his opinion.
