The latest trailer for Todd Phillips’ hugely-anticipated Joker dropped yesterday, and the new footage definitely doubles down on what everyone involved has been telling us for months; that this is so much more than just a run-of-the-mill comic book movie. It looks to be an intimate, character-driven study of a psychologically-troubled man free from the usual tropes of the genre, and the new promo is giving off vibes much more reminiscent of Scorsese than Suicide Squad.
When it comes to playing the most iconic villain in the history of comic books, there are two things that the fans will instantly look out for: the appearance and the laugh. For better or worse, each actor that takes on the mantle of the Joker has put their own unique stamp on the character, and based on what we’ve seen, Joaquin Phoenix looks to have knocked it out of the park.
Marc Maron might not care much for their opinions, but for others involved with Joker, the reaction of the fans is incredibly important to the movie’s chances of mainstream success. And luckily for them, the response to hearing Phoenix’s interpretation of the character’s iconic laugh for the first time has been overwhelmingly positive.

Aw man. This is gonna be intense. That laugh in the beginning sealed it for me. Definitely watching this. He’s such an amazing actor. I wish he was playing the real Joker.

Joker has already been pegged as a potential awards contender by many, and the new trailer only seems to strengthen that argument. Joaquin Phoenix is widely regarded as one of the best actors working today that always gives himself entirely to his performances, and having resisted overtures to sign on for comic book movies in the past, there must be something incredibly special about the project to convince the 44-year-old to play the Clown Prince of Crime. And we can’t wait to find out what that is.
