Marvel’s Avengers Reveals Why Thor Has Abandoned Mjolnir

Superhero fans eager to get their hands on next year's Marvel's Avengers will already know who the game's major players are. Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow and Thor make up the iconic team in Crystal Dynamics' ambitious adaptation, but how much do we really know about the direction it intends to take with each character? After all, the developer has more than 70 years' worth of comic history to draw inspiration from and with countless story arcs to mix and match, the likelihood is that not even the most devout reader will have the ability to accurately guess Crystal's intentions. Thanks to some recent trivia provided by the studio, however, we're starting to learn more and more about what it is that troubles each of Earth's mightiest heroes.

After all, the developer has more than 70 years’ worth of comic history to draw inspiration from and with countless story arcs to mix and match, the likelihood is that not even the most devout reader will have the ability to accurately guess Crystal’s intentions. Thanks to some recent trivia provided by the studio, however, we’re starting to learn more and more about what it is that troubles each of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Today’s topic of choice? Thor. Or more specifically, why the revered God of Thunder has chosen to abandon his trademark weapon by the events of Marvel’s Avengers. Continue below to commence your crash course on the History of Superheroes and discover how this all fits together.

Put simply, Crystal Dynamics looks set to adapt a reoccurring story arc for the son of Odin. Clearly blaming the supposed death of Captain America on A-Day as being the result of his own failures, Thor has dubbed himself unworthy of Mjolnir and left it to rest at a commemorative statue of his dear departed friend. The twist here, however, is that, rather than being deprived of his treasured weapon as a means of being taught a lesson (as depicted in both the comics and 2011’s Thor), the Asgardian has done so out of choice.

How long Thor will choose to wallow in self-pity is anyone’s guess, of course, but expect a furious storm like no other when he finally does return to battle. You can see the character in action by heading over here.

Marvel’s Avengers is out May 15th, 2020, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Google Stadia.
