Apparently everyone got it wrong yesterday, Josh Hutcherson is not Spiderman. The site that first reported it got their facts wrong and set the internet into panic mode for no reason. Today we get confirmed reports from /Film, who are reporting based on a press release from Columbia Pictures, that Andrew Garfield is going to play Spider-Man.

Like Hutcherson, Garfield is also somewhat of an unknown. He has starred in films like Boy A and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus but has yet to become a household name. The director of the upcoming Spiderman film, Marc Webb talked about selecting Garfield.

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

I’m not going to post the full press release as it is quite long but here’s an excerpt.

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

While I still think that Jamie Bell should be the one to play Spider-Man, I’ll settle for Garfield. He’s a better choice than Hutcherson, that’s for sure.
