The dynamic duo of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have both recently spoken out about their upcoming films. Surprisingly, the films are a departure for the duo as Scorsese won’t be working with DiCaprio in Hugo Cabret and DiCaprio won’t be working with Scorsese in the Hoover biopic. Nevertheless, we now have some more information on both films. Check it out below.
When asked how Cabret was going, Scorsese had this to say:
It’s going. It’s been an experience. Every time you set up the camera, there’s the geometry and everything. You’re really redefining and trying to figure out how to tell the story again with pictures and this 3D, which is really interesting. And of course it’s a film that’s a fable… We’ve been shooting for quite awhile. We only have a few more weeks, I hope. I hope to get it out by next year.
The other film that was discussed was the J.Edgar Hoover biopic in which Leo will star and Clint Eastwood will direct off a Dustin Lance Black script. DiCaprio confirmed that the movie is set to start shooting in January or February. For those who haven’t been following the film, Black spoke about it earlier this year, saying the following:
Hoover is told from Hoover’s point of view, which I’ve never seen before. I’ve read all the books; I’m a history buff. It’s always told from a rather detached point of view, and I think that’s because Hoover never let anyone in. And because of that — and the contradiction between what he believed his history was and what his history actually was — it lends itself to a less-traditional structure. There are more contradictions.
Now let’s take a step back and look at both films. Hugo Carbet not only has Scorsese behind the camera but it also has a phenomenal cast in front, including Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s List) and Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Jude Law (Repo Men, Alfie) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast, The Departed).
The summary is as follows:
“Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D, tells the tale of an orphan boy (Asa Butterfield) living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl (Chloë Moretz), and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop (Ben Kingsley), he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.
Also appearing in the all-star cast are Academy Award® nominee Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Ray Winstone (London Boulevard), Christopher Lee (”The Lord of the Rings”), Helen McCrory (”The Special Relationship”), Frances de la Tour (Alice in Wonderland), and Richard Griffiths (The History Boys).”
The plot doesn’t look like a typical Scorsese film, that’s for sure, but with that star studded cast, and the 3D, which you can be sure will be done right, I think this may be one of Scorsese’s best. It’s unfortunate he’s not working wit DiCaprio on the film but I still think it’s going to turn out great. I’m really interested to see the first trailer for it.
As for the Hoover biopic, well all you have to do is put the words DiCaprio, Eastwood and Black together and you automatically have an Oscar nomination somewhere in there. I’ll put money on it now that the film is a serious Oscar contender. It’s a biopic, on quite a prominent figure and the three men behind it are all Oscar quality professionals.
