With the remake of the iconic ‘80s campy horror/comedy film Fright Night just around the corner, I’m thinking about the good and bad of horror remakes. Usually these are thoughts of negatively (for good reason), but there have been a few noteworthy horror remakes that actually improved upon the original instead of butchering it. THR reports that Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil and GK Films have acquired the rights to The Vault, a sci-fi/horror comic book about sea divers unleashing an ancient evil. The Image comic is written by Sam Sarkar and drawn by Garrie Gastonny, the team behind the supernatural western comic Caliber.
Last week new details emerged about director Alex Proyas' epic pic about the battle between Heaven and Hell, Paradise Lost. With the Fright Night remake hitting theaters nationwide August 19th, Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse Theater and the Austin Film Festival teamed up to screen the original Fright Night. Not only did it give fans the opportunity to see the cult ‘80s classic on the big screen, but the screening was hosted by Fright Night writer/director Tom Holland and Machete scribe Alvaro Rodriguez, with a Q&A afterwards.
New details have emerged on controversial director Lars von Trier's next movie, aptly entitled The Nymphomaniac. Described as a film about "a woman's erotic birth," we now have information from Screen Daily. They tell us that Trier's self-proclaimed porno will start shooting next summer in English, and there will be two versions due to the graphic nature of the film; one "hardcore" edition, and one that will have a wider theatrical release.
