Colonists were fed up with British rule at that time, and they decided to take it out on goods imported from their leaders' homeland. Tea was refused entry into the city, and was even dumped into the ocean in protest against taxes and tyranny. In the end, that anger-based action ended up being one of the pivotal moments that led to the start of the American Revolutionary War.
